Mr. Taco Downtown Information

Tucked into the heart of Galveston at 120 20th St, Mr. Taco Downtown feels exactly like the kind of place you hope to stumble upon while exploring the historic streets near the waterfront. The location makes it an easy stop whether you’re wandering through downtown shops, heading toward the Strand District, or simply looking for a quick, satisfying bite after a day at the beach. From the outside it has the casual charm of a laid-back taco joint, but step inside and the energy quickly makes it clear why so many local reviews recommend it.

The menu leans heavily into classic street-style Mexican comfort food, and that’s where this place really shines. Tacos are the obvious centerpiece, served on warm tortillas with generous fillings that range from seasoned carne asada and tender barbacoa to flavorful chicken and al pastor. The portions feel fair for the price, and everything arrives fresh and well-prepared. One visit included a plate of carne asada tacos topped with cilantro and onion, paired with a squeeze of lime and a house salsa that brought just enough heat without overpowering the meat. It’s the kind of simple combination that reminds you how good straightforward ingredients can be when they’re handled properly.

Beyond tacos, the menu offers plenty of variety for anyone who wants to branch out. Burritos come loaded and satisfying, quesadillas are crisp and cheesy, and breakfast items like huevos plates and breakfast tacos give the restaurant an all-day appeal. Many diners seem to appreciate the ability to customize orders, which is something that comes up frequently in online reviews from locals and visitors alike. The salsa bar is another highlight, offering different levels of spice so everyone from cautious eaters to heat lovers can find something they like.

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, the sort of relaxed setting that encourages you to sit down, enjoy your meal, and maybe order one more taco than you originally planned. It’s not fancy dining, but that’s part of the charm. Tables turn over quickly during busy hours, especially around lunch, and the staff generally keeps things moving with friendly, efficient service. On one visit, the cashier happily suggested a popular combo that several regulars had been ordering, which turned out to be a great recommendation.

Because of its central downtown location, the restaurant attracts a mix of locals, tourists, and workers from nearby businesses. That mix gives the place a lively vibe throughout the day. While information about the restaurant’s history isn’t widely documented, its steady stream of repeat customers suggests it has earned a loyal following. In a city known for seafood and coastal dining, this small taco spot manages to stand out by doing something simple very well: serving flavorful, satisfying Mexican food in a convenient downtown setting.

What People's Say About Place

Very clean, love the genra, good price, good quick food,

Where to start: Atmosphere: outside from a night walking around downtown. They had the music playing. The outside looks so bright and festive on the dark streets. There was a lot of people out walking around as it was St. Patrick weekend. Looks like a great stop and they also have some outside seating. Inside is kinda small but it's still plenty of space for small groups of 5 or 6. Food: we had the birria and comes with consume which I love. the tacos were tasty and good. We also had an order of regular tacos. They were also pretty good. Would I order from here again in Galveston. Absolutely. The food is amazing. I do recommend. We had 3 orders of birria. I asked prior to ordering if they came with beans and rice and was told no. it came with consume, which was delicious. We also had an order of tacos and 2 drinks. I can't remember the total because I paid cash and could get a receipt but I did get a receipt for the 2 drinks and it was $7 and some change. Service: the guy working the counter is not very friendly. When asking questions about the menu he seemed annoyed. He also got upset when I asked for my receipt. Started turning the register around telling me it was broken and he couldn't do it. It's fine. Sometimes stuff happens but as the customer it's not my fault it's broken. Just simply apologize and move on. Parking is a little difficult if you're not looking to pay and hang out downtown for a bit. Overall. Would I stop here again. For the food, yes. The atmosphere, yes. I will even say yes to the service.... maybe he was just having a bad night. I'm all for second chances.

Great customer service! Had a little mistake on our order but they were quick to correct it and make everything right!

Love their beans! They taste like the ones my mom make (aka they’re authentic )

Amazing tacos and food! The problem is… they are never open when they say they will be. The voicemail is terrible, in fact, it tells people “dont ever call me again.”

Hands down the best tacos I've ever eaten. The charro beans were so good I drank the juice!

The food was delicious, the atmosphere was perfect and the service was great. Also you MUST try the guacamole! The owner handmade it and it was delicious. This taco joint is a must!!

Mr Mike is extremely friendly and provides excellent service. The chicken quesadilla is so juicy and flavorful it’s crazy
